Google is finally rolling out the ability to target ads to users by interest — based on their previous browsing activity, or behavior — to all of its advertisers. The company first announced a beta test of this capability more than two years ago, back in 2009, and it has slowly been introducing it to larger groups over time. The company says the capabilities are available today.

The announcement marks Google’s full entrance into the world of behavioral targeting in AdWords.

The system looks at the types of pages that a user visits, considering how recently and frequently the person visits those sites, and associates that browser cookie with the appropriate interest categories. Users can view and edit the categories they’ve been associated at Google’s Ad Preferences page, and opt out entirely, if they so desire.

Advertisers can choose from over 1,000 interest categories. Google says advertisers testing the capability were successful, citing one advertiser increasing brand lift by 40% and a shoe railer driving 400% more conversions at a lower cost-per-sale. Pricing is on a cost-per-click model with an auction.

ICANN approval allows virtually any domain extension as a part of its expansion strategy, so now say welcome to anything.anything

Peter Dengate Thrush, who chairs the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), created a New History on Internet World. ICANN, which manages the Internet’s web addresses worldwide, at a meeting in Singapore, approved an expansion of the range of addresses available, so that website names will soon be able to end with anything from generic names such as “.shop” to “.restaurant” to business brands like .INDSOFT.

ICANN, until now, had only allowed 22 Domain extensions including “.com” and “.org”. Last year, “.com” had 89.2 million address registrations; “.net” had 13.5 million, and “.org” 8.3 million. All three were so-called “legacy domains” that were created in 1985 before the formation of ICANN. The next most popular domains were “.info” with 6 million registrations in 2010 and “.biz” with 2 million. But from 2012 ICANN will accept domain name requests for almost any word in any language starting January 12, 2012 to April 31 2012. “But this won’t come cheap. Each extension right will cost a US$ 185,000 one-time application fee and a US$ 25,000 yearly fee,” according to Internet Expert Ritesh Kakkad of IndSoft.net

He also Added, “We feel .COM will still continue to be be KING of all Domain Name Extensions, always, because significant money has already been spent on ‘.com’ promotion and many giant Internet brands have already been created with .com extensions in last few years of Internet History. But at the same time, we expect the Domain Name market to grow by leaps and bounds because of increased opportunites and available options. Already our domain name promotion offer of .in and .co.in domain name extension are priced below US$ 1/PA. Such competition gives direct benefits to retail customers.”

Extended domain names could lead to lots of confusion, said Krishna Rawalo, Regional Head working with the financial advisory firm Netzcapital, “Currently we have a set of domain extensions that could be used for visiting websites and for email communication, But with unlimited domain names around, Communication via email and domain names could lead to a lot of confusion with less technical people like us”

The seemingly inevitable antitrust investigation of Google appears to be taking another step forward, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that the US Federal Trade Commission is “poised” to serve the company with subpoenas as part of a probe.

Google may receive the FTC demands within days, and other companies may get similar requests asking for information “about their dealings with Google,” the paper reports.

The investigation seems likely focused around Google’s search ads and whether Google has somehow exercised unfair dominance of that area. From the WSJ article:

The new inquiry, by contrast, will examine fundamental issues relating to Google’s core search-advertising business, said people familiar with the matter. The business is the source of most of Google’s revenue. The issues include whether Google — which accounts for around two-thirds of Internet searches in the U.S. and more abroad — unfairly channels users to its own growing network of services at the expense of rival providers.

This FTC investigation has been expected for some time amidst calls in Congress for an examination of Google’s business practices. There’s also interest at the state level, with Texas’ attorney general launching an investigation last year. Google also faces an antitrust investigation in Europe, as well.

Representatives from both Google and the FTC declined to talk to the WSJ about today’s report.

Also see our other post today, Googleopoly: The Definitive Guide To Antitrust Investigations Against Google. It covers the Texas and EU actions, along with many other related cases.

A new ruling by the Federal Trade Commission casts a doubt over just how lucky the number seven really is as companies such as Social Intelligence Corporation can keep an archive of your social media activities for seven years. The information stored is to be used explicitly for background checks but will be captured/achived even if you have deleted it from your account(s).

The number seven, aside from that astonishingly-acted, yet creepy-as-hell movie of the same name, has been linked with luck. Geez, they even sang about it Scholastic Rock. Ok, I’m showing my age now…

But now, thanks to this ruling, anything and everything you do on any social media network will be archived for potential future use by folks like potential employers or credit companies.

Now truth be told, there are limits to what a future employer can do with the information provided by companies like Social Intelligence Corporation. They must comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act by informing candidates/credit applicants, etc. that they are performing a background check, must obtain their permission before doing so, and must tell the applicant about any damaging information they come across.

As to what exactly Social Intelligence Corporation looks for in a background check, the CEO of the company Max Drucker said they look for four types of content:

Racially insensitive remarks

Sexually explicit materials

Flagrant displays of weaponry

Other demonstrations of clearly illegal activity

According to Drucker, 5 to 10% of background checks flag at least one thing from the aforementioned types of content with the most common offending content coming in the form of sexually explicit pictures. He also said the offenders are more often younger, white-collar employees.

On the bright side, Social Intelligence Corporation can only see content you have made public, meaning if your Facebook page is only open to friends, they can’t and won’t see it.

And as for Twitter, they only review “recent” Tweets, whatever that means.

Of course there is the issue where someone else posts something of you, say a picture of you waving an Uzi around and tags you in that photo, well then you’ll have a problem.

Here’s an example of a report which Social Intelligence Corporation sent to a client. The person in question was flagged for their Oxycontin affection, shall we say, and for apparent support for legalizing marijuana.

The moral in ALL of this… ?

Well, one word: THINK. As in “think before you post, tweet, blog, share,” YouTube, Flickr and on and on… Before you hit enter, think. “Is this something I really want the world to see and/or read?”

Or… just do whatever the hell you want and keep everything private… everything.

How Making Money On Internet Is More Like A Gamble?

Article by Alan Lim

For those, who are newbie to the online earnings, making money on Internet is going to prove a gamble. It is so because being a fresher, you are not familiar with all the aspects of these earning opportunities and as a result you are more likely to face the failure.

Most of the people consider making money on Internet to be a gambling game. But, is it really correct? Well, to some extent, it proves to be true! Now, the question emerges why is it so? Well, the reason behind this statement is that more and more people are failing in earning money through online jobs. Identical to a gambling game, where the chances of your success depend upon your predictability, in online jobs, you are require to predict which work provider is genuine and which one is a scammer. Unfortunately, all the search engines are unable to identify this for you. That’s why you have to complete this task by your own. Now, as being a newbie, you won’t be able to identify whether the website you are going to deal with is authentic or a fraud one. It is so because most of the people desire to be a millionaire overnight. And that’s why they are trapped by the scammers. Usually, these swindle mentors advertise themselves as the highest payers and that’s it! It is sure that most of the fresher will go for them as money means a lot for everyone and that’s how they are cheated.

But, does it mean there are no chances to get success in these online earning opportunities? Surely not! In fact, those who are currently making money through these opportunities have once also played this gamble. Then how did they overcome this problem? Just by means of making a deep research and approaching the correct sources. Always remember the fact that Internet is a hot spot for the scammers these days. They are not concerned with the quality of your work and your dedication towards it. The only thing which matters most for them is cash that they can earn from you. And that’s why they require you to register yourself with them before you can start dealing with them.

Therefore, if you are really interested in making money on Internet, just avoid such scammers and devote yourself towards the work.

Corporations are facing a growing risk as consumer grade tools and services suchas blogs, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn enter into the IT security landscape. Webservices, Internet applications and other consumer online products are rapidly distortingthe lines between corporate and personal usage, while malware outbreaks and data losscontinue to snowball out of control.

“Firms are using more consumer-style Web applications… 84 percent of firms increasingtheir use of Web applications”- Forrester 2010 1

Preserving enterprise security while using Social Media services has become astructural requirement as IT departments must find equilibrium between use and control.

Barring the use of consumer-style tools like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn byemployees is no longer realistic. Additionally, filibustering and application control policiesare becoming inefficient with dynamic user generated content and cross-site, drive-byattacks on trusted websites. All of this coupled with access through multiple endpoints(mobile devices, PDAs, and tablets) has rendered traditional approaches futile.

With strong visibility of the application content and the aptitude to apply flexible policiesover users, applications and protocols based on the real-time comprehension of theintent of these applications, deep content inspection-based security solutions empowerorganizations to take advantage of the benefits of Social Media, while safeguardingorganizational policies and guaranteeing compliance mandates are met.

Losing Control? Go Past Obstruction

Classic methods that rely on “allow or block” policies are now obsolete since employeesutilize Social Media for both work and non-work related activities. Alternatively, securityplatforms that permit clean content offer greater benefits to the organization by scanningand securing everything coming in and out of the network to protect against malwaretransmissions, data loss and blended threats. Positioning remediation-based, high-performance web security products with deep content inspection in their networksenables organizations to certify real-time security enforcement when retrieving dynamicweb applications. Organizations no longer need to agonize over what is being approvedwhen they know that malicious content is blocked and clean content is accessible.

Beat Social Engineered Assaults

The popularity of Social Media has allowed psychological manipulation of end-users byhackers. Hackers are capitalizing on the downloading of malicious content or browsingmalicious sites. Recent studies by leading security vendor show that social networkingsites are 10 times more effective at delivering malware than previous methods of emaildelivery. To defend an organization against these socially engineered attacks, inlinereal-time threat protection and malware analysis of all content, including hidden injectedmalware attacks and downloads, is necessary. Deep content inspection-based solutions, with high-performance architecture and anti-malware analytical engines are capableof efficiently analyzing web traffic for malicious attacks at all endpoints. This providesorganizations with the comfort of knowing that they are still protected, even if theiremployees have been tricked.

Compliance: Don’t Let Social Media Cost Your Company Money

Social media carries an array of legal risks, and necessitates the same complianceand regulations that govern e-mail and the static web. Whether a firm allows the use ofsocial media or not, employees continue to use these sites, opening up the company topotential compliance violations. By ensuring that an organization’s internal policies andarchiving systems are safe, companies are able to extend their reach to Web 2.0 andSocial Media in order to maintain compliance.

Prevent Social Media Attacks From Stealing Sensitive Information

Organizations must continue to evaluate the implementation of policies that aredesigned to protect sensitive corporate information being retrieved through consumer-style applications (fileshare, Gmail documents, etc.) or other Social Media sites. Deepcontent inspection-based data filtering and content scanning capabilities can preciselymonitor and control sensitive data transmitted in web, email, and network applications, thus averting costly information leaks being transmitted through traditional or consumerfocused applications.
